Frequently Asked Questions
Texas is really flat. Where do you fly?
Texas is one of the best places to fly hang gliders! In fact, the distance world record in a hang glider was in Texas. We can fly pretty much anywhere with different ways to get in the air as described below.
How do you get in the air?
If there is a mountain, you can foot launch. However, in Houston we revert to towing methods to "pull" us to altitude, then we release from tow and fly freely. Towing methods include: Aerotow, Boat Tow, Truck Tow, Scooter Tow.
How long can you fly?
Flight time depends on thermal activity as we rely on thermals to stay in the air longer and fly long distances. However, typical minimums with no thermal activity will be about 20 minutes. We can stay in the air for many hours with good thermal activity.
Is it dangerous?
Short answer: No.
Long answer: Hang gliding is a form of aviation, not an extreme sport. Due to the lack of an engine, it is pilot action that determines what happens to the aircraft, where it goes, how fast it goes, etc. Staying safe while flying depends on the decisions we make, so we ensure safety by pursuing proper training, understanding our limits, and learning from more experienced pilots.
